What are the Most Haunted Hotels in Baltimore?

The city of Baltimore, Maryland, has a distinctive old-world charm that draws in visitors intrigued by history, as well as those who love a good ghost story. This east coast location has plenty of haunted places to visit, with the most prominent being two of their oldest hotels, The Lord Baltimore and the Admiral Fell Inn.

The Lord Baltimore Hotel

Known as one of the most haunted locations in the country, this hotel is home to some of the most tormented spirits who endured tragic deaths during a time of hopelessness and despair.

The History of The Lord Baltimore Hotel

The Lord Baltimore Hotel is a grand and prestigious landmark, towering above other buildings in the area since it was built in 1929. It still holds the same majestic reputation and style as it did nearly 100 years ago, giving it a gothic and oftentimes spooky feel.

This hotel first opened its doors in December 1928. It stands a towering 289 feet high and has 22 stories along with a tower featuring an elaborate sky parlor and a roof made from copper that still looks as lustrous as ever, even today.

This French Renaissance-style hotel was designed by William Lee Stoddart, a well-known architect from New Jersey. Stoddart is credited with designing many well-known urban hotels throughout the eastern United States.

The Lord Baltimore has long been a popular place to stay in the city thanks to its elegant rooms and traditional charm. But many choose to stay there for different reasons, in hopes of encountering one of the many ghosts who haunt the halls.

The Great Crash of 1929

The Lord Baltimore Hotel has seen its fair share of tragedy over the years with one of the most disturbing scenarios being the mass suicide that occurred following the stock market crash in 1929.

The Great Crash was the result of the rapid decline of New York Stock Exchange prices, which triggered the beginning of the Great Depression. People who had their finances and livelihoods tied to the stock market feared the worst when the crash happened, which led to many of them, unfortunately, taking their own lives out of despair.

There is a record confirming that more than twenty people died by suicide after jumping from the 19th floor of the hotel when news broke of the stock market crash. Many believe that the spirits of those people now haunt the floors of the Lord Baltimore Hotel, including the parents of a young girl named Molly.

The Spirits of The Lord Baltimore Hotel

Countless stories have been shared by guests and staff members regarding strange noises and apparitions inside the Lord Baltimore. People have reported seeing eerie figures on the mezzanine above the lobby or ghostly apparitions sitting inside the Lord Baltimore Tavern.

These spirits are always dressed in period attire that appears dreadfully out of place in modern society. The spirits are known to show up and then quickly disappear at a second glance.

The staff at the front desk have received many calls at night from guests, reporting that a strange woman has appeared in their rooms. When that happens, they also notice their belongings suddenly go missing or have been moved to another location.

Inside the grand ballroom of the hotel, the ceiling is adorned with vintage chandeliers. The delicate crystals from them have been known to sway back and forth on their own. Guests have also seen a couple dancing in the ballroom at night and believe they are the parents of a young girl named Molly.

Out of all who jumped to their death from the 19th floor of the hotel, the most talked about are the parents of a 7-year-old girl named Molly. The family booked a room at the hotel for a few nights and attended an event in the ballroom.

This was just hours before they proceeded to join the others in jumping off the 19th floor. Many say they believe the family was there to celebrate one last getaway after hearing news about the pending fall of the stock market before sealing their fate.

The spirit of Molly is typically seen roaming the hallways wearing a white flowing dress and playing with a small red ball. There are rumors of a child-size handprint on the wall near one of the hotel’s penthouses that will not fade away.

Guests have heard the sound of a young girl playing with a ball, bouncing on the floor upstairs and throughout the hallway. The eeriness of the young girl’s lonely spirit wandering through the halls alone is enough to send a chill down your spine.

There are many variations of the story about Molly and her parents. Some claim that Molly’s parents brought her along with them as they leaped to their death. Others say they left her behind. Whichever story is true, it is a sad tragedy that makes the atmosphere of the hotel feel even more haunting.

The Admiral Fell Inn

Fell’s Point is a lively and colorful neighborhood in Baltimore that’s filled with charming boutiques, pubs, and galleries. The location was founded in 1726 and is the oldest waterfront community in Baltimore.

It is known for its old-world charm and maintains the quaint and welcoming feel of a European village with brick sidewalks throughout Main Street. The Admiral Fell Inn is a notable part of this small town that has a lot of history and mysterious legends linked to it.

The History of The Admiral Fell Inn

The Admiral Fell Inn originally comprised seven adjoining buildings, some of which dated back to the 1700s. It was a pleasant place to stay inside the town of Fell’s Point and a welcome alternative to other less-than-desirable accommodations such as saloons and brothels.

It was a popular place for sailors to stay during the 1900s. Today the 80-room Inn retains its quaint charm and cozy ambiance while also offering modern amenities inside the newly renovated space.

The Anchorage Hauntings

One of the Inn’s original buildings, known as The Anchorage, was used as a boarding house primarily for sailors from as far back as the 1790s up until just a few decades ago. It was originally maintained by the Christian Port Mission, offering a safe and clean room for sailors to stay in after their time at sea.

Church services were held on Sundays for anyone who was interested and neighbors in the community would often bring treats and meals for the sailors to show their appreciation for their service.

While it may sound like a pleasant place to stay, some of the sailors had endured so much mental and physical dismay while at sea that they brought much of their heartache and agony with them to the hotel.

Several sailors lost their lives while at the hotel due to being inflicted with incurable diseases. It was reported that one young sailor shot himself while on the premises.

Guests who stay at the Admiral Fell Inn have reported seeing apparitions of sailors floating around, knocking on the doors of hotel rooms, and hearing footsteps in the halls at night.

The ghosts have been known to prank guests by setting off alarm clocks at strange times or causing lights in the hotel to flicker. A few guests have even heard the sound of sailors singing a jovial song.

The Anchorage was eventually taken over by the Young Men’s Christian Association in the late 1920s. They managed it through the 1970s until it was transformed into a cider and vinegar bottling plant. Over the nearly 200 years of operation, the Anchorage hosted tens of thousands of male guests.

The Horror of Room 413

The most haunted room at the Admiral Fell Inn is room 413, located on the fourth floor. This room has a dark presence that has remained there ever since a horrific hate crime took place inside in 1999.

One night, a young man named Christopher Jones was staying at the inn while attending a pharmaceutical convention in Baltimore. Christopher had a stalker by the name of Gary Mick, who had developed a lot of hate toward Christopher.

Gary was a known homophobe and had a strong hatred toward Christopher because of his sexuality.

One night, Gary entered Christopher’s hotel room and attacked him, brutally bashing his head using a hammer claw. Christopher was fatally struck nine times before Gary managed to escape unseen.

Several days later, Gary was hunting down another victim and had attempted to kill him as well when the police intervened. Once arrested, the authorities discovered his fingerprints matched those at the scene of the murder in room 413.

Gary was sentenced to two life sentences and is still being held at a maximum-security facility in Western Maryland.

As for the room at the Admiral Fell Inn, there is an unsettling dark energy inside the walls of the room where Christopher Jones was murdered that haunts guests and staff members to this day.

The Lord Baltimore Hotel and the Admiral Fell Inn are still operating today, welcoming guests who want to experience the beauty of Baltimore, as well as those curious travelers who are eager to discover if the legends of these old, haunted hotels are true.
